Ok. . . so… we’ve all heard of what are now being called “Stevie Ray Voughn-a-bes”. . . Let’s just get this out of the way right meow… neither of these two frontmen/lead guitarists is or ever will be the late great Stevie Ray, nor do either of them ever deserve to be called “Voughn-a-bes” or wannabes whatsoever. While of course there are similarities, in the cases of Walter Trout & Chris Watson, these similarities should only serve as a compliment to the talent & versatility shown by each artist. To watch these men play guitar with such high intensity and maintain such precision… was truly a sound AND sight to embrace as the past, present, & future of blues-rock fusion.
As a quick side note to the show itself, I’d also like to give thanks to the wonderful staff at The Grenada (located on Lower Greenville in Dallas). On the phone, at the doors, & behind the bars this event was made easy & fun for me and my guest by the hard working Grenada crew. Thank you for everything!
As if they knew I was coming to the show… The Chris Watson Band (from Denton Tx.) opened with “Them Changes” by Buddy Miles (made famous by Jimi Hendrix & The Band of Gypsies) & anyone who knows me knows that I am a Hendrix nut. I thought their rendition was great but was more excited to see/hear what Chris had in his original arsenal. The keyboard player whose black & yellow wingtips I’ll never forget (his name, however, escapes me) was a perfect compliment to Chris. He banged away with great stage presence and searing runs much like that of the band leader & his Stratocaster. Honestly, I don’t know how the keyboard made it through the entire set without being severely damaged… let alone sounding SO good. The rythm section was able to show a vast array of chops in some of Chris’ original songs. The way they were able to fuck with time on a couple of these songs was most impressive. At only 25 years old, former Denton High School Bronco, Chris Watson also shows a great potential in his song writing for getting the women wet, as evidenced when my P.I.C. (whose name will NOT appear in this article) turned to me during one song & whispered “this song makes me want to take you camping in the woods & fuck you like a rabbit!” I wish I knew the name of the song. I think it was titled “I’ll Tell You”, but for more obvious reasons than just song titles… I wish I’d bought the CD. To go with my uh… camping gear.
Not to be upstaged. . . Walter Trout came on with a hard fast 3,000 note, 3 minute solo then said “Thank You! Goodnight!” seconds before his band errupted into their opening number. Perhaps in reference to the “Voughn-a-be” stigma, the savvy veteran Trout later had this to say to the crowd, “I know a thing or two about playing in Tx.. People in Tx. know about guitar players. So… if you are playin’ the blues in Tx. you’d better not be fuckin’ around…”. On this night… Trout was not fucking around. He played what at one point he jokingly called “Armenian folk music” with his ussual sweat soaked passion. With very high energy he squeezed everything he could out of every note like a kid on the playground in July trying to get the last drops form a juice box. Later on in the set Walter’s keyboard player Sammy Alvila’s son Danny Alvila came on to play accoustic guitar for two songs off of Trout’s latest albums. Being a working musician myself, one of my favorite moments of the evening came in between these two songs. After a short conference with “young Danny” Walter let the crowd in on the secret telling us, “This is the first week of the tour & after that song ‘young Danny’ says to me ‘Hey man… you gotta pick I can borrow?’… He played that whole first song with his thumb man…” Classic… Danny… been there man. You handled it GREAT! What “young Danny” also handled GREAT was actually my most favorite part of the show. Trout called him back to the stage to play some electric guitar & after what seemed to be some minor technical difficulties the two of them traded licks like the “cuttin’ heads” scene from the movie Crossroads starring Ralph Machio. With their age & experience gap being SO wide I wondered if we might witness “Strato-castration”, but “young Danny” held his own with a brash confidence that I’m sure Walter enjoys every night of the tour. Other high points of Trout’s set for me were a song called “Philosophy of Soul” & another he simply refered to as “a song about adultery”.
In closing, if you have the means, get to a Walter Trout or Chris Watson Band show TODAY! Find out for your damn self that the blues can still rock!- Joey Black
While…not dead by any means…The WoodGrain may have been laying extremely low lately, but… The O.S.C.C. has been laying EVEN LOWER…
Trying to find the source of this strange yet incredibly common phenomena has taken us to some wierd places… inside washers, dryers, behind them, behind home entertainment centers…into old gym bags… the In & Out Burger in North Hollywood on Radford… Hell… Maybe “Little” Larry Digby Sellers has a special compound made to look like a Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store where he stores all the Halves of pairs of socks that most of the nation, consequently the WORLD is missing. Interesting, but doubtful.
Recently, it’s come to my attention that maybe I need to widen my scope on this project. With the holidays upon us & temperatures dropping slippers & slipper socks are now part of my focus. Much like normal pairs of socks, they often inexplicably separate somehow. Thus leaving a HUGE void in your life. (on one of your feet anyway…) We’ve ruled out dogs. While they DO love themselves a good smelly sock or slipper, we discovered that not only do people who Don’t own dogs experience the anomaly, the problem is also more prone to occurr with CLEAN socks in which dogs are’nt so much interested. Cats…maybe. Knomes… who knows. “Little” Larry Digby Sellers… He’s a fictional character so… doubtful.
My new theory… “Socknetism”… Think of it like magnetism but with socks & where it only works like opposite ends of two magnets. They push eachother away. And since slippers & slipper socks are BIGGER & stronger than normal pairs of socks maybe they possess a more advanced ability to become separated, but not near the ability to become hidden. Interesting… Stay vigilent faithful sock &/or slipper wearing public… Joey Black is on the case.
Man The WoodGrain didn’t go anywhere so I hope that none of you tiny little goofballs did either. I’m sorry to my … vast … public for taking such a long break from the site. I’ll quote Val Kilmer playing the character of Jim Morrisson in Oliver Stone’s “The Doors”- “I believe in a long… prolonged dillusion of the senses to attain another level…” Yea right… whatever the fuck that means. Honestly, I’ve gone through some personal things. Those closest to the band know all about it… & I’ll keep it just that way for now.
Moving on, during our slowed down period The WoodGrain did go through some shit. Franky quit the group, came back, missed a gig, Judge Smith filled in beautifully… Brak got arrested again… Jason Throws Whiskey is apparently broken up… A side band with three WG members formed out of our Open Mic Night, AND played a real gig… we (The WG) just played at Rockin’ Parrodise last Fri. &… Franky quit again… So… introducing on drums for The WoodGrain JUDGE SMITH. We WILL miss Franky! But… the show must go on.
Lastly, The WoodGrain is playing Raz on the Braz, Terry Rasor’s annuall birthday event/Tx. Musicfest/Campout on the Brazos river at Redneck Haven (Milsap Tx.). The dates for the campout are Aug. 19th, 20th, 21st. The WoodGrain will be the first band to play (2pm) on Sat. 21st the last day of the festival. We are honored to be a part of this event. Please look up Raz on the Braz and/or Terry Rasor for details. We’d love your support, YOU’LL LOVE THIS EVENT!
Live the WoodGrain, Miami in Dallas Fusion Fashion Show, A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Zacarias Guerra House, an orphanage for abandoned and troubled children in Nicaragua.
Ok…We’re …Back with Beryl Court… an up & coming band out of the North Texas area that has so graciously agree’d to be The Dallas County BlueNote’s Tues. Interview.
DCBN: We’ve got Tristan (vocals, guitar) & Taco (Bass) from Beryl Court on the line here to enlighten’ the future & current fans as to what the band’s about & where they came from. Speaking to where they came from… How was Beryl Court formed?
Tristan: Well, Matt (Drums) & I started a band our freshmen year of high school in 2001 with a friend of ours. We had several different names & we were AWEFUL! I walked from that band because I got tire of the other guy, & after a few days Matt got tired of him too. We started playin’ with another friend & went by ‘Silent Pulse’ for awhile. Then we found out that name was already taken by several bands AND some drum company! So we changed it to Beryl Court, which is actually a street adress, in 2005. We played as a three piece until the summer of 2008 (when Buxton joined). We did that for awhile… then in Jan. 2010 the “other” guy walked & then we added Taco. And that’s where we are now.
Taco: I’ve been Alex’s (Buxton) friend since ‘07. We jammed some together before 2010. According to him I was “Good” (from what he seen with his ‘friend’ at the time)… I didn’t know alot… But in ‘09 when I got my Ibanez Sabre for Christmas… I picked it up & forced myself to get much better. It worked. Around March of ‘09 I saw B.C. play at Curtain Club with their old “member”. It was SICK! I thought “Man…it’d be awesome to do that! Espescially with Alex Buxton (lead guitar)!” That was my dream… I geuss… That year went on… I got better…2010 rolls around… I keep practicing to myself, talkin’ to my other friends about makin’ a band. Then Febuary rolls around… I get a call around Jan. 28th …It’s Buxton! This is what I got: “hey man, what’s up?”…I respond as usual thinkin’ he wants to hang out & such. Next thing he says…”You want to be in a band?”… I puase for a bit, I didn’t quite understand what he asked. He asked again with a chuckle because of my response. It took me a second to respond again but I replied with a “FUCK YEAH!” He filled me in on the situation. I had to learn 7 songs for a show in one week. God, what a load on my shoulders!
But I pulled some shit outta my ass & did a spectacular job according to my mates. Since then, they feel like a whole new portal has opened for them.
Ok…Done with that…shoot!
DCBN: You “pulled some shit…outta your ass” & opened a “portal”… ?right … with your “mates”… a “whole new portal”… Mm…K… Sounds kinky. But… I LOVE how descriptive you guys are!
Moving on…
I think you guys are a more serious, adult, barroom version of say…Matchbox20 or Flickerstick. But…What the fuck do I know?! Who are your influences? Who do you guys personally & as a band strive to pay homage to?
Tristan: We have lot’s of influences from Matchbox20 to Third Eye Blind… to all the metal stuff that alex is into. Honestly, we just try & write what we think sounds good.
Taco: We all like how we sound. We just want to have a good, all around, well written sound. It doesn’t matter what genre it is… We love it.
DCBN: Yeah…that’s present and accouned for, but, ok Taco what are YOUR influences?
Taco: My influeces?… Dream Theatre, Symphony X, Lamb Of God, Godsmack, Megadeth, Pantera ($$), S.O.A.D., Tool, & Alexander Buxton to name a few…
BN: Man that F’ing metal! If you guys could play on any stage, for any event…past, present, or future… anywhere in the world… Where would, when would it be?
Taco: Ozzfest with Pantera… Dunno which year…
BN: Fuckin’ A that’s AWESOME!Damn… the las’time I saw Pantera was at Ozzfest ‘94.
Tristan: Easy, a sold out Beryl Court show with thousands upon thousands of fans who all love it & know all the words. When & where are subject to change, but hopefully sooner rather than later.
BN: Good… Answer…! What’s your favorite location, event, & or venue to play at?
Tristan: (Laughs)… Thanks. My favorite place to be is just on any stage. Being on stage brings out a side of me that ussually isn’t there in my every day life.
Taco: I’ve only played at Rockin’ Parrodise, Curtain Club, & Sidetricked Pub n Grub in Arlington. I’d say in that order ‘cuz you guys ROCK! (referring to BluesFolks.com Production’s Open Mic Jam @ Rockin’ Parrodise every Tues.)
BN: You’re a different dude Taco… I love it. Ok, last question… What’s your favorite song & who is it by?
Taco: Um… “Serpent’s Kiss” by Symphony X.
Tristan: “Motorcycle Driveby”… Third Eye Blind.
BN: Excellent Tristan! Third Eye Blind is definitely apparent as an influence for Beryl Court. Man, you & Taco were a great interview! Thanks!
We have the tix. on sale for our battle of the bands performance at The Curtain Club Sun. Mar. 7th $8 apeice… please buy one wether you can make it to the show or not.
Also, The WoodGrain added two shows to our calender just this evening. We’ll be at Pitchers in Arlington Sat. March 27th & on the main stage at The Ridglea Theatre Fri. May 7th.
A teacher at my son’s school recently hypothisized that the amount of heat and motion in some dryers could be causing the socks to be sent through a space time worm hole. He went on to speculate that somewhere in space there could be a planetary type mass larger than our moon made up entirely of socks without matches. Truely FASCINATING!
YES!
YES! We had a record snowfall the day before! No! There weren’t many fans. No the roads were NOT icey. and… YES! IT WAS A GREAT SHOW! The WoodGrain headlined the upstairs stage at The Ridglea this past Sat. Feb. 13th. We rocked the shit out of it just as we had the main stage months before. (video coming soon)
As always Jason Throws Whiskey was a bad ass opening act for The WG, but right now I gotta tell you about Skitzofuel & The Beautiful Trainwreck. These guys went on right before us & man…not only did they KILL…they were an awesome match with us. Skitzofuel…remember them! We’ll be playing with them again… I hope.
A very drunk…I mean…deep undercover informant for The 1SCC has recently gone “off the record” saying that our socks are being plundered by knomes. These knomes are allergic to dirty socks. This is why the socks continue to dissapear after they go into the dryer, usually one at a time! She went on to add that the leader’s name was Hairy & the knomes’ theme song was “Mother” by Danzig… curious INDEED! Stay vigilant!
Cry Awhile by Bob Dylan performed here by…duh… The WoodGrain with “Gooch” sitting in on tha Sax. while Kunkle WhiteBread partied like it WAS his birthday… live @ Rockin’ Parrodise Fri. Feb. 5th…
And here on the recently found “secret” fan video from a long time ago in A.J.’s Honky Tonk far far away you can hear Joey Black screw up the song HE wrote… COME BACK SOON…but… A.J.’s DID have us back soon & we kick ass every time we play there! Enjoy…?
Last night’s first Tues. night Open Mic’ Jam presented by Bluesfolks.com Productions at Rockin’ Parrodise was everything an open mic’ night should be. The eb & flow was good but not too good, the musicianship was downright excellent, without sounding too rehearsed(it was by and large NOT rehearsed), & most importantly there was a committment to diversity.
I must admitt that I missed the first act of the evening due to the parent viewing of my son’s One Act school play. A man I know only as Paul or Paully apparently ripped it up on the electric guitar. I will catch Pual’s show next time. Next up were James & Blake of Jason Throws Whiskey. I did catch the end of their set & was AGAIN pleasently surprised. I mean, I love James’ songs…it’s just that…every time I hear them it seems to be a slightly (VERY SLIGHTLY) different yet just as good version. I don’t know. Decide what you think of them yourself. This Friday Feb. 5th Jason Throws Whiskey is opening for The WoodGrain at Rockin’ Parrodise for Kunkle Whitebread’s birthday show.
Next we were thrilled to present the band Barrol Court. Their influences were certainly identifiable, but that didn’t keep them from having a uniqueness about their sound. The vocals were great, and… from what I gathered talking to them, theres more in the bag of tricks than what we heard last night. Barrol Court guitar player Alex was fast & smooth on his beautiful green Parker guitar. Speaking of Alex…next he & bass player Taco jammed with drummer Judge Smith, playing classic rock hits & insde obscure funk jams to lose perfection. I’d like to thank Judge for having his kit set up for the evening.
Next up, a blast from the past as Jesica Mize (formerly of The WoodGrain) & her brother Bud played a couple of beautifully harmonized accoustic gems. Inevitably, I got up with Jess & we fell (er…stumbled) back into the old form. It was REALLY fun. I’m glad she & Bud made it.
Some fine Guitar work was also provided by Bluesfolks.com Productions’ own Mike “Slacks” Stephenson. His beer bottle slide work was on target once again. We love you “Slacks”! Even though you wore jeans las’night!
Finally, it was time for the night’s featured artist, Brak “Briznak” Moore, bass player for The WoodGrain. Now, I was all set to play lead guitar with Brak on some of his songs that I’d either heard a couple times or barely heard before at all. This being said, my excuse if we were bad, was well in place. It was abruptly shot to hell when a drummer out of the crowd (Judge) & a sax. player off the street (Shadow) came up and helped us take Brak’s songs to church!!! Shadow litterally walked into the bar & up onto the stage in mid song & asked “Is it ok if I play with you guys?” Before we could answer he was blowin’ the sax. … Judge was bangin’ the drums & our minds were blown. It was like the SNL band’s mini me. Really though… It was a great,GREAT jam session.
One last thing that made this Open Mic’ Jam so awesome was the crowd. The crowd at Rockin’ Parrodise is ALWAYS nothing but FUN, & the various new comers only helped that atmosphere!
DO NOT MISS IT NEXT TUESDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Starting this upcoming Tuesday Feb. 2nd & every Tues. night following at Rockin’ Parrodise (121 bus. @ Southwest in Lewisville)… Kunkle WhiteBread & Joey Black of The WoodGrain will be hosting a true open mic’ night. We want musicians of all ilk… pickers, grinners, screamers, laughers,… uh crooners… brooding romantic types… country, blues, bluegrass, folk, rock, pop, reggea, bluesfolks… We need all of you.
So please, throw your guitar (or whatever you play) on your back & roll on down to Rockin’ Parrodise… bring your personality & leave embarrassment at home. Hell, have a cold beer even!!!
email: band@bluesfolks.com or just comment on this post with return info. for details…
I recently found a single sock behind the entertainment center in my son, Jordan’s, room. The problem is it was not one of HIS socks!!! This latest developement could prove to be crucial. Perhaps the socks have an escape route to unknown oblivian via the back of our homes’ entertainment centers. Check behind your TVs at once & maybe we can stop losing halves of pairs of socks for good!!!
I could barely contain myself… All day long this past Saturday I had to find ways to keep my mind occupied so that I wouldn’t explode with excitement about the night’s upcoming Cowboys playoff game at “The Death Star” vs. The Eagles (formerly known as “The Dreaded & Feared”) I wasn’t worried at all about the outcome of the game. Really. I just couldn’t wait for it to get underway. In fact, I knew I was in the minority all week when I’d speak to other Cowboys fans & hear: “I don’t know if we can beat’em three times…”. Phoo-ey…! As soon as the week 17 drubbing was complete, I knew that Dallas would not only beat Philly, they would blow them out… AGAIN.
In the first meeting the teams had, at Philly in week 9, Dallas won by three points 17-14. It was the type of low scoring, defensive game, on the road agains’t a good team that the Cowboys were NOT supposed to be able to win. The key was Tony Romo’s ability to beat the blitz on third down time after time. So, naturally, in their next meeting (we all know how that turned out) the Eagles declined to blitz quite so much. This gave Tony & the rest of the Cowboys offense time to REALLY take Philly apart. See below.
So Philly blitzed…it didn’t work. They didn’t blitz…it didn’t work. I couldn’t help but think…”What are they supposed to do now?”. Of course they would make ajustments… but really… how many changes can a clearly inferior team make?!
Donovan McNabb tried to show the Cowboys & their fans that he was unphased by the previous week’s result by doing his Micheal Jackson impression & playing air guitar as he strutted onto the field. It was Romo, however, that proved to be the cooler cucumber. Late in the game he could be seen doing a hilarious, motion for motion, immitation of Ed Hocule’s baseball throw first down signal. Havin’ FUN…
What I didn’t know was that it wasn’ the first time this had happened…
In Closing…the Cowboys proved to have the better team, 34-14, & the funnier quarterback. But remember Eagles fans… it wasn’t McNabb’s fualt. It never is right? And somewhere T.O. had to be thinking…”man, it really WAS my fualt!”-Joey Black
I was at Franky Fernando’s house the other day to toss the old pigskin around in preparation for his family’s annuall day after Christmas football game. After our brush with football mediocrity in the field across the street from his house, we went back inside to roll one up so we could burn one down. His lovely fiance Allison was looking after little Mack & doing some luandry when I heard her say to Franky “Where’s the other sock that goes with this one?!?” It was then that I realized that I was not alone in the Universe!!! And the idea for this collumn was born!
For years now, I told her, my wife, son, & I had been losing halves of pairs of socks with no plausible explanation. We have several lone rangers in the sock drawers…( & YES I JUST PLURALIZED LONE RANGER!!!)Nike socks that don’t match eachother…striped socks with no twins…It’s anarchy! We figured it was simply a strange phenomenon, exclusive to our washer & dryer. Or…our dogs were hiding them…
After mulling this over with the Fernando’s I decided to do more research. I quickly ruled out dogs because Franky doesn’t have one. Maybe it’s been our cat all along. They have a cat. Or…There’s the lint trey to collect lint. Is there perhaps an unknown ’sock’ trey to catch…socks? And if so, why is it catching them? Where would they go otherwise?
This is only the beginning. Stay tuned for more “One Sock ‘chronic’ Chronicles” to see what I discover. Please leave your comments and any personal stories you may have about one sock chaos. See you tonight at LoneStar…
My two favorite things on TV? Metalocolypse cartoons & football… but tonight?…Footy ball first… The F’ing Cowboys just about had me drink myself into oblivian yesterday with that putrid performance against San Diego… 20-17 loss. One huge positive were the excellent ribs! Thanks Sherrey! At least you can say that these last two games have NOT been Romo’s fault. And… if they could shock the world & beat the Saints in N.O. then I’d be able to forget these ;ast two loses. I’m rooting for it… not betting on it.
Man, I just got through watching the 49ers handle the Cardinals 24-9 on MNF. The Cardinals had 7 turnovers…
Every time they went on offense all I could think of was Andy Samberg’s “I threw it on the GROUND” SNL video… it’s Hilarious ENJOY!!!!!
I mean, really, that’s what the Card’s running backs did with the damn football… they put it on the GROUND… And Warner looked like he thought AZ were wearing their red jerseys…the way he kept throwin’ it to the 49ers…
Anyway, bummer about Colt not getting the Hiesman but… remember… Matt Lienert beat out Vince Young for the Hiesman right before the Horns beat USC for the National Championship. I’m hoping history repeats itself! Hook’em Horns!
We’ve been out of the public eye more lately… as Dethclok would put it “just bein’ regular jack offs…” I’m still lookin’ for a “joe” job to go along with being a first rate entertainer in the world’s greatest bluesfolks music band. Kunkle Whitebread’s been puttin’ together scratch workin’ as a bar-back/cook at a certain live music establishment that, for the purposes of this blog, shall remain nameless.
Mr. Nate is makin’ samiches for dough. Hmm… maybe he’ll finally eat a sandwich. I’ve been tellin’ him to do that for a while… Uh… Franky & the family are doing awesome! I think Brak has been stayin’ further towards the straight & narrow. One can only presume due to a certain cool new lady friend… but that is unsubstantiated…
I’ve been slowly workin’ my way through HBO’s Rock N Roll Hall of Fame concert on my dvr. Bonnie Raitt’s performance with Crosby, Stills, & Nash is incredible. If I could find it on youtube you be watching it right meow. Football season throwin’ The WoodGrain for a loop lately. But don’t tell me the time should have been run out on Texas. The ball bounced out of bounds with clearly a second left on the clock. They dodged a bullet. Hook’em Horns! Let’s hope the Cowboys get their shite together and beat the Chargers & the Horns figure out how to beat ‘Bama!!!
See you all tommorrow night at The “Rat”skellar Bar on the campus of University of Dallas in Las Colinas. We’ll be opening for Jason Throws Whiskey… Should be a killer show.
-Joey Black
The WoodGrain will be playing at LoneStar Country Club in Coppell tommorrow night Dec. 3rd as opposed to The “Rat”hskellar on the University of Dallas’ Las Colinas campus. The show at The “Rat” opening for our good friends Jason Throws Whiskey has been moved to Thurs. Dec. 10th. We apologize for the confusion. See you at LoneStar!
Also, The WoodGrain will be returning to Rockin’ Parodise in Lewisville Fri. Feb. 5th. It will be an extravaganza fill with ZAZZ for Kunkle Whitebread’s birthday!!!
The WoodGrain consumes legendary amounts of booze… would any of you ever consider going to rehab?-Amber Philadelphia Pa.
Franky Fernando: Rehab’s for quitters!
Joey Black: Is there a bar there…?
Mr.Nate: No! I’ll drink myself to death first!
If your band could play anywhere, where would it be?-Dedra Lewisville Tx.
Brak: Austin City Limits
Franky Fernando: Woodstock baby! Unless you’re talkin’ serious…in which case… anywhere in Amsterdam!
Kunkle Whitebread: Hillsboro Ks., or either Fillmore… east or west. How ’bout a Jim Beam distillary…
Mr. Nate: WoodStock, the first one…
Joey Black: Inside the ocean, in a submarine, near the bottom of the Marianna Trench… or Figi…
What was the first song you ever wrote and why?-Sherrey Plano Tx.
Joey Black: Well, I know that the first song Mr. Nate EVER wrote was “Blackwater (Hide what I done)” & he taught it to me pretty early on. It’s about ditchin’ your old lady’s dead body in a river… so… one can only guess why he came up with it. Uh… as a complete group the first original that came together for us was “Come Back Soon”. I wrote it one day after my wife left for work & her perfume lingered in the air making me miss her. It’s a good, sexy tune.
How long has Joey Black been playing the guitar?-Cindy Cleburne Tx.
Joey Black: All together about 18 years, but playing seriously… about half that time.
What are some interesting trivia facts the fans of The WoodGrain would like to know about the band?-Ashley Carrollton Tx.
Kunkle Whitebread: How LITTLE time we spend on our hair…?
Joey Black: Uh… I watch some total chick shows on TV with my wife. Ugly Betty & Desparate Housewives to name a couple.
Mr. Nate: I can build musical instruments…
Franky Fernando: All of our music is raw, uncut emotion…
How many original songs does The WoodGrain have?-Cynthia Arlington Tx.
Joey Black: Thirteen…? I think… Sweet Elijah, I Don’t Give A Fuck, In the Doorway, Blackwater, I Don’t
Like the Blues, Walkin’ Into the Rain, New Boogeyman Blues, Cranberry Juice, Come Back Soon, Highs been Low, Black Shoes Brown Hat, Buyou, & Stay Down ’til ya Come Up
What artists have the greatest influence on each of the band members?- Ashley Carrollton Tx.
Franky Fernando: Micheal Shrieve, Chad Smith, Quest Love, & Buddy Berry
Joey Black: Well, I’m fanatical about Jimi Hendrix, but with regards to THIS band…my greatest influence has definitly been Mr. Nate.
Kunkle Whitebread: Waylon Jennings & Mickey Rapheal, Willy’s harmonica player.
Mr.Nate: All ’60’s R & B… uh Rye Cooter, Taj Mahal…
Brak: Townes Van Zant, Steve Earl, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Beck, Willy & the boys… old rock & roll… new shite… a little of everything I’ve ever heard…
Where do babies come from?-Scott Carrollton Tx.
Joey Black & Mr. Nate: From gettin’ fucked up with your girl at a WoodGrain show… we hope!
How do you think fatherhood affects being a rocknroller?-D.Z. Fort Scott Ks.
Franky Fernando: It doesn’t. You gotta keep’em separated.
Joey Black: I try to keep my family life separate from my rocknroll life, but as my son gets older it has been nice to him come to a couple of shows & help out. He’s old enough now to kind of know the score, & as much passion as I have for playing mucic in The WoodGrain, spending quality time with my son is my real passion. I live to watch him play sports!
Better late notice than no notice… The WoodGrain drummer Franky Fernando is now the proud father of Mack Alexander Casarez. Mack was born this past Fri. at Baylor medical center in Irving. He weighed 8lbs. 12oz., looks just like his dad, and has huge… huge hands. Congatulations Allison & Franky… Now let’s get that boy fitted for a baseball glove!
It was a night to remember… a day to forget. So why am I immortalizing it here on the intra-web? Because it’s really to damn funny a’story not to share with the masses. Or… at least the ten or twelve fans of The WoodGrain who haven’t already heard the legend of the four hour soundcheck.
It was Grand opening weekend for Rockin’ Paradise (formerly Hiccup’s & Daddy Rocks) & The WoodGrain was slated to headline the entertainment this past Sat. Nov. 14th. To try to insure that things would go off without a hitch during the evening The WoodGrain agree’d to meet at R.P. early (3PM) to coordinate things with D.J. YagerMonster… (seriously). We knew that they had house P.A. speakers for D.J. YM to blast tunes during our breaks, but we were responsible for bringing a soundboard for all the band mic.’s.
Once all members of The WoodGrain were set up…& our new sometime-part-time soundman Stark a.k.a. “Slink” had everything coordinated with D.J. YM… we all very casually took 15 thinking “We’ll come back…knock this out…then go home & party like rockstars until showtime…”
Right…
This is where things went haywire… Everything SHOULD have worked… nothing did… Hoping to have been back at my place eating like kings (thanks Andrea) by 4:30… it became 5:30 before we deduced that EVERYTHING worked except the soundboard we had brought. This was NOT GOOD. Myself, D.J.YM, & Mr. Nate were frantically calling each of our limited contacts in hopes we’d find a soundboard (such a delicate & usually valuable piece of equipment) on such incredibly short notice…on a Saturday night. I was ready to give up hope & cancel the show when a name popped up in my phone… A name I wasn’t sure I even had the right phone number for. That name was Henry Story, dummer of Grandma Black. Grandma Black was the cover band I (Joey Black) used to front. Not knowing what to expect. Not expecting much if anything… I said “fuck it” & dialed Henry.
Halelujah he answered & actually had a soundboard we could use!!!
After making the 45 min. round trip to the Colony & back I triumphantly re-entered Rockin’ Paradise…new soundboard in hand. We could FINALLY do a sound check!!! Problem was, our stomachs were growling loud enough at this point to be heard through the mics. & Franky had already had to leave. After all that we rushed through an extremely shaky, crowd annoying, half assed sound check.
Over four hours we’d gone from pride & confidence to unsure hopefullness to complete desparation & back to YOU GUESSED it pride & confidence & BACK to unsure hopefullness. At least we could finally go home & EAT.
After an AWESOME meal (again, Thanks Andrea) our pride & confidence once again ran high. After all, we ARE The WoodGrain…the greatest bluesfolks music band on the planet! Where there’s The WoodGrain there’s a way.
The show went great. We had a great turn out & hopefully added to our ever growing list of crazy die hard fans. We hope to play Rockin’ Paradise again soon. They really do have the cheapest drinks in Lewisville. Special thanks to Stark. He stressed out over the whole soundcheck thing more than we did, and thank god because we couldn’t have pulled the show off without him.
Thanks a ton to the R.P. management and staff. Thanks to Mongo on security. Thanks to the us… The WoodGrain… for kickin’ ass & takin’ names. Thanks to Henry. Thanks most of all to the fans. We love you!
The WoodGrain isn’t now & probably never will be politically driven in our endeavors. We’re musicians & while we DO have opinions… we simply aren’t the people who should be trying to shape other’s opinions about anything other than our music. However, that does not mean we won’t play for the right cause, & this past Sat. that’s precisely what we did. The Veterans of Foriegn Wars troop rally/car show/musicfest at Hulen Park in Cleburne Tx. hosted by Sgt. John Luarales & Real Rodz was a truly beautiful event on an even more beautiful day. I couldn’t say enough times (into the mic. or otherwise) how thrilled we were to be a part of it.
It was a scene of American life that I’ll never forget. On that day, at that park, the grass WAS greener, the smiles WERE warmer, and I just couldn’t get the John Cougar Melloncamp song “Ain’t that America” out of my head. Cheesy, I know, but really…being there…looking out at the kids playing, smelling the food, checking out the sweet vintage rides, & listening to the opening performers (members of The Dirty Jewwett Band who DIDN’T have the flu)… I couldn’t help but actually think AIN’T THAT America! So, performing at an event in support of the men & women who have fought & put themselves in harms way for that America was a huge honor for The WoodGrain.
It was our first time playing in the great town of Cleburne, the hometown of myself, Brak, & Kunkle WhiteBread (and for the most part my entire family). It was both awesome & kinda sad to be playing a show in the park my Grandma always used to bring me to. As children she used to pose Kunkle & I for pictures in front of the historic Train that sits not but a hundred feet from where the show took place. It was awesome to be playing for several family members who are not usually able to travel to our shows. It was very sad that Grandma Dorothy & Papa Warnell were not able to be there. But… I know they were there in spirit… probably NOT hiding their beers… and certainly arguing…
The show went great… the after party at Sgt. Laurales went even better. Thanks John!
In closing, the issue of support for returning veterans is something that’s quite a hot button right now. Unfortunatly… not without good reason. More support structure IS needed… wether it’s some form of support from a local V.F.W. post (which Luarales is planning on opening soon in Cleburne) or more thorough care given by the government, military, and/or Dr.s that are responsible for these returning heros. Once again, we’re only musicians & we are not in the business of trying to influence political opinion (you may be completely opposed to the war itself)… but returning veterans needing more support right now is not my opinion. It’s a fact.
LoneStar Last Night where were you… Tomorrow Cleburne Hulen Park 3-8pm WoodGain @ 6-8pm
For The Vets, and VFW founder in Cleburne Johnathan Laureles, Car Show and Food… be there
Alright… here’s the low down… “Boats & Ho’s” was both a great success & a slight failure… Great costumes & crowd participation with regard to the theme, the bands were ALL awesome… ya da ya da ya da… I just can’t believe we weren’t able to draw more people… Especially during the earliest part of the show… it was easily one of the most beautiful days of the year… but hey, if you missed it, too bad! There were also problems with the sound system that were beyond anyone’s control… I think Scott & Jeff (A-B Productions.com) did an outstanding job & without the equipment & service they provided… the show WOULD NOT have gone on…period.
Halloween/Brak’s 30th Birthday party (also at LoneStar) was another wonderfully diverse WoodGrain party… With special guests, local underground hip-hop act HK (poorandangry.com), The WoodGrain got started blowing the NEW roof off of the joint… Lady GaGa & Brittany Spears each made an appearance… the beer flowed like wine & the women flocked like the salmon of Cappestrano …
…our schedule has just been updated… check it out… as well as the new pictures and videos ‘Slacks’ made mention of … here’s one…
object width=”384″ height=”313″>
last… & I hope not least… look for (drumroll ……………………………………… ) The WoodGrain’s first studio (non live) album to be released some time in Feb.. It’s gonna be like ordering a hamburger… but actually getting a “cheese”burger… crazy I know… but hey this will be a hot gift idea for Xmas ‘10… the record, not… the “cheese”burger…
And that’s the LOW DOWN…
For those of you who missed the show on Thurs., don’t make the same mistake again… You’re being given another chance at saving your immortal WoodGrain souls… Thurs. we got a taste… a dry run if you will, but tonight the bullets are live… Special guests local underground hip-hop act HK (PoorandAngry.com) will be back… The WoodGrain will be thick… And for a cherry on your Saturday… It’s The WoodGrain bassist Brak’s birthday party… there will be cake…. We will be “going the distance” … I just really hope SOMEBODY show’s up in an “Octo-Mom” costume… see ya’ll tonight!!!!!!!

W&B: Mr. f#%^&*ing Nate… at last you keep still long enough for us to let the WoodGrain fans… ‘in’… A member of your band once recently called you “the youngest old soul in the music business…”…
You’re response…?
MN: I’m not the youngest old soul in music. Everybody has soul, most people just don’t know how to express it.
W&B: We can dig that man… so … the BlueNote has found out for us that you may (or may not) have grown up somewhere near or around south Irving (as did Joey Black)… Also that you come from a big family… How has this impacted you in recent years as you … Mr. Black & the rest of the members of The WoodGrain dive into the local music scene with a real sense of reckless abandon …?
MN: Well, Yeah I grew up in south irving, with eight brothers and sisters. I’m the 4th son, and me and all my brothers are heading straight for hell. So I think my parents your pretty used to it by now.
As for the state of my immortal soul? I think I still got a hold on it.
W&B: Hey Mr. Nate… Burnstem here … sorry I’m late. I had to see a guy about some…stuff…uh that last answer, truthful…yet cryptic man. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . uh. . .oh yeah… What does The WoodGrain have stirring in the pot that might have the humidity rising…?
MN: Well we got a whole lotta songs that are stewin. Thats the way we do it. We all have ideas that we’re constantly throwing around. We’ll be sitting around completely twisted, and we’ll come up with a cool verse or line, or a riff. And we just keep it in the circle and slowly work on it. But to give you a hint about these new songs, were focusing on our usual topics of sex, drugs, alcohol, killin, swindlin, pimpin, wimin, and sex.
W&B: Yeah man… alot of the “WoodKnots” are sayin’ stuff like MR. Nate’s songs are all about killin’ (i.e. Blackwater)… but we see beyond that & wonder what you think that sort of fan opinion does to your image & that of your songwriting?
MN: Well seeing as songwriting is a form of self expression, I suppose the fans think that I’m a murdering psychotic womanizing thieving drug addled alcoholic heartbreaking egotistical douchebag… Damn, I’m in a tight spot…
W&B: Don’t cry Mr. Nate… Sunday mornin’ gon’ come ’round again…
Really… you know these people love you… no matter what the content of your songs they… we… can feel it… right… you dig man?
MN: I can dig it. Hey man, I was wondering, whats your view on the Texas blues scene today?
W: My official stance on the uh… Texas …blues… ’scene’ is that it’s sort of at a precipice… you know… it’s great…GREAT music! It always will be but right now… & hopefully with you guys at the forefront of it…that ’scene’ you speak of is ready to evolve man… and right now… what do you think Burnstem…
&B: Man, you guys are totally freakin’ me out right now… Mr. Nate …
MN: I think your right man, the entire music scene is headed in a good direction. Popular music as we know it is going to burn like the shit…that it is, and I’m going to smile when it does. People are starting to listen to MUSIC again. We live in such a great time.
W&B: Man…you rule Mr. Nate… Aight… las’question… you know it’s comin’… what’s your one & only favorite song & who’s it by?
MN: Well Burnstem and company, I really cant give you a song, but I can give you an album. If I was to only have one album to listen to for the rest of eternity, it would be Cold Dog Soup, by Guy Clark. It doesn’t happen very often, but every once in a while, there’s a album that’s so good, you can never get tired of listening to it.
The title song, as well as the song fort worth blues
(about the death of Townes Van Zandt), are just two of the perfect tracks on that album. Do yourself a favor, and get a copy.
W&B: Once again …far fucking out man. Thanks for your time and being so forthcoming Mr. Nate!…
MN: (Dial tone….)

BlueNote: We’ve got the newest member of The WoodGrain on the line here, bass player Brak Moore… What’s goin’ down Brak?
Brak Moore: Uh…just doin’ a little vacuumin’…bakin’ some chicken cordon bleu balls.
BN: Chicken cordon …Blue …Balls…? Outstanding! Let’s get to it. How’d you get tangled up with this riff-raff?
Brak: A twisted tale of burning bridges, whiskey, & a brief encounter with the Benbrook police was…the eye opener which led to the unfortunate splitteration of the BCB (Bulletproof Cricket Band). Which…in turn led me to the rich & new-fangled bluesfolks old school vibe that feels so much like home… Not to mention our early escapades around the Brazos River campfires , & the forces of nature that bring like minded people together in the name of “let’s get fucked up!”…
BN: So…’OUR escapades’ round the campfires…who in the band are you referring to partyin’ with back in the day? Which like minded people?
Brak: I believe Joey Black & Kunkle have wethered the Texas sun in the shade of the pecan trees for the love of 3am cocaine songs layed out on a fat spliff in a van down by the river.
BN: Which leads me to my next question…(what’s) your inspiration? Musical &… otherwise…?
Brak: From Townes Van Zant to Tool & almost everything in between. But, the blues has a special place in my heart where pain can be a beautiful thing… & just tell me a story of life …
BN: Beautiful man. I think I’m gonna cry. So, you feel good about the project so far?
Brak: The ‘project’ seems to have an agenda all it’s own. I’m excited to be a part of the whirlwind that is The WoodGrain. So, yes. I see the ‘progect’ lookin’ like a hot blonde in a short skirt…FULL of potential.
BN: Full… I like that! Alright, customary last question… What’s your one and only favorite song of all time?
Brak: Mountain Cry by Blues Traveler… if I had to pick just one… which is logistically impossible!
BN: Great interview man…thanks alot & we’ll catch up with you at the “Boats & Ho’s” theme party at LoneStar on Oct. 24th. This has been Woodgrain & Burnstem reporting.
Let me start with some full disclosure for all of you fans of The WoodGrain & bluesfolks.com. I, Joey Black, am a huge fan of Pearl Jam. I love Eddy Vedder’s voice & lyrics. I am also quite fond of Mike Mcready’s Hendrix’esque riffage. Of course I hear the same thing from everyone I talk to about Pearl Jam…”After ‘Ten’ all of their albums suck!”…or…something along those lines. Ok, first of all you DO have to have a pretty open musical mind & real affinity for the band to enjoy later P.J. stuff. But… to compare ‘Ten’ to any other record (let alone all other P.J. records) is just … dumbass in my estimation.
But… it’s ok dumbass. Just for you (but really for me) ‘Ten’ was re-released this past year and I finally upgraded my collection with a birthday gift copy of it. (Thanks Andrea)
Four previously unreleased songs & a different, even grungier (how is that possible?!?), version of “State of Love & Trust” to go along with all of ‘Ten’s original greatness. I’ve always loved this album because it’s one of those rare records you can put in while your sitting around getting stoned or on a long drive & you can litterally listen from start to finish without the urge to skip a song. This says something about song placement on a record as well as the musicianship.
If you haven’t given this record a spin in quite a while or haven’t heard these great tunes in too long… save for the infrequent play they get on the radio…GET OUT YOUR COPY OF ‘TEN’!!! Or… buy…download… pirate, whatever, the new version. Re-introduce yourself to classics like “Once”, “Even Flow”, & my personal favorite “Release”. Then… enjoy the previously unheard material. The guitar solo on “2000 Mile Blues” is worth the cost of the album. Yes… Pearl Jam playing the blues… awesome. Enjoy!-Joey Black
For those of you who attended the St. Patty’s Day “Homegrown” musicfest (on a TUESDAY…) you know what’s up. You will need to remove the chain… cuz this event will…be… off it. So far the lineup includes:
Tommy D.
Dragna
Jason Throws Whiskey
eleven40
The Southern Brothers
KBob & The Last Stand Band
Another Year Colder
Neptune Locals
& Your’s Truly The WoodGrain
Sound by A-B Productions
Festivities will be announced as the event draws closer. If you’ve ever been to a “Pimps & Ho’s” party… you’ll understand how much more diversity you’ll be offered in costume choice @ a “Boats & Ho’s” party. The whole thing is scheduled to kickoff around 3:30 on Sat. Oct. 24th. Nine great (diverse) local bands plus contests & all sorts of other … adult activities for a measley $10 cover charge. Please, don’t be one of the few unlucky souls to have to complain of missing it.
Now…we were deploying (thanks for driving Andrea!) for only our second show at Fort Worth’s famed Ridglea Theatre. But… like all that is The WoodGrain… We smacked of a certain sultry kind of confidence. We had a charming smile to go with our swagger. If only once, we’d been here before.
First up that night was Micheal Lackey, whom I hope to have for the BlueNote’s Tues. interview very soon. This kid (yes…kid) can really, really play the guitar! He played alone on stage (digital audio backing, drums, base etc. were fed through the PA) wearing a mask & never spoke a word. At all. His show, however, was very entertaining. All sorts of crazy streaming Star Wars video flashed behind him on the wall as he shredded the original Star Wars theme prog. rock style on the guitar. A great show for a head…& Star Wars geek as well.
As the WoodGrain pre-show tailgate party wrapped up…(cough) …Neptune Locals was tuning up & getting ready to blow everybody’s mind. They were also back for a second Ridglea go’round. Tight as ever, they got heads bobbin’ & people swayin’… THESE GUYS take their blend of different alternative styles… throw them all in the treble & bass blender & do not let you down.
WE The WoodGrain were on next. This was not only our second trip to The Ridglea, but also only our second time on stage with our new bass player Brak. He only helped to add another THICK layer to the woodgrain of The WoodGrain. The show, we were told, was a great success. If not for me (Joey Black) breaking a string on the last part of our second to last song “Down in Mexico”… the show would have been complaintless. I do apologize to devoted fans (Mom, Casey, Sherri, Robert, Mike, Ash, Melissa, …Everybody…) for depriving you of our great closing number “Black Shoes, Brown Hat…”.
The rest of the evening was kind of a blur. I missed all of Late In Texas’ show because I was enjoying a Mr. Nate solo concert at The WoodGrain’s post show tailgate party. Thanks Rhonda for the Jack tacos!!! Thanks Forrest for the cold beer!!!
I do remember that The Dan Family Kicked ass!!! A good, great… compliment to a WG performance. Any time you see that these guys have a show (if you love WoodGrain) you’ll love them!
When the dust settle’d… arrangements had been made… & arm wrestles were lost. The WoodGrain made our way to a secret location in Fort Worth for a great mix of just enough smoke, too many beers, & frozen pizza. Thanks Jan & Brent!!!
Thanks to all those who love music. Keep listening…& READING!
BlueNote: We’re here with the harmonica player for one of Dfw’s fastest rising mucical acts. It’s Kunkle Whitebread of The WoodGrain. Alrite, how did you gravitate towards playin’ the harmonica?
Kunkle Whitebread: Kind of a chance thing… Tried a cheap harp a buddy had at a party & was hooked. Been at it ever since. Just kinda picked it up & went. You know…?
BN: Yea…yea…a chance encounter. Blowin’ harp isn’t the only thing you contribute to WoodGrain onstage. Expound on your role(s) in the band on & off stage.
K.W.: On stage I just try to add another dynamic with either the backing vocals, noise makers, or on the horns (harmonica). Just puttin’ bricks in our wall of sound…
BN: “Bricks in the wall of sound”…I like that. Next question, who are your personal musical influences, harmonica players & otherwise?
K.W. On the harp it’s gotta be Mickey Rapheal…Willy’s guy. He just has this great tone. But also you got Lil Walter, Sonny Terry, & Elwood Blues. Just music wise it’s all over the chart, but the Stones, Waylon Jennings, Chris Ledoux, Jimi, & Zepplin are all up there around the top of things. Love good music.
BN: Good music…thats what we’re here for… Most bands start out aiming for a younger audience with delusions of super-stardom & a sense of financial entitlement. The WoodGrain has gained alot of momentum with what seems like an opposite approach. Please explain that approach, & why you think it’s been so effective for you guys.
K.W.: Yeah, I don’t know really… We just kinda saddle’d our ponys & rode. Never been much of a plan except to make folks have a good time. These days it’s tough all around & we just a bunch of guys tryin’ to give a reason to dance & smile. Hell…who needs money! I drink cheap beer anyway…
BN: Right on bro… Last question… What’s your one & only favorite song? By whom…?
K.W.: “Every Time I Roll the Dice”… Delbert McClinton. Song just makes my ‘get up & go’ get to ‘gettin” … you know…
BN: Great song! Good interview man, thanks.
K.W.: You too man…
This past Friday (Aug. 7th) myself & Franky Fernando did our parts to help Don O & the 89.3 knon Texas Blues Radio show raise a little bit of money. We dominated the phone lines with witty banter as blues lovers from across the galaxy called in to donate money so that beloved blues artists like the late great Robert Ealley can still be heard over the airways. It was a great experience. Don O is a hell of a guy, & we hope to hang with him in the studio again soon. We’re hoping that once we have better quality recordings of our original blues favorites “In the Doorway” & “Stay down ’til you come up” we too may also grace that same air. Until then, we gon’ keep gettin’ good wood on it. See you all soon!
BlueNote: Alright…thanks Danny. How would you & your bandmates refer to the sound of Neptune Locals in terms of style & influence?
Danny: I guess our style is pretty eclectic & our influences are Ft. Worth bands from Sally Majestic to Brutal Juice & everything in between. The Ft. Worth scene is our sound & influence.
BN: I love it man…stay true to your roots. How long has Neptune Locals been together?
D: 4 or 5 months…
BN: Did the name of the band spawn out of that local loyalty?
D: The name suggests “near yet far away”, or being from a distant place, but here now. Ok, you got me! We’re aliens from the Planet Neptune here to assimilate into your warm tropical cultures. Damn you’re good Joey!
BN: Just doing my job as an investigatory journalist… no matter how many friends I lose or people I leave dying along the way…. so long as I can be an investigatory journalist… no matter how many friends I lose…or people I leave bleeding, bloodied, & dying along the way! (Zoolander, couldn’t help myself)
D: Right on!
BN: Right on indeed. So, when can local music fans expect your album for sale? Or, is it just going to be implanted in us after we’re abducted in our sleep?
D: Hey…How’d you know about that?! Well, we’re looking into recording now, but we have 3 tunes @ myspace.com/neptunelocals & we have a 3 song demo we pass out too. I’m also planning on going to ktcu Friday to see if they’ll play our stuff on our new cd Fridays from 9-11pm.. You never know.
BN: Killer man. Excellent! Just a couple more questions. First, what is your one and only favorite song? And who’s it by?
D: I don’t know…don’t really have one. Guess my ‘go to’ would have to be “I wanna love you” by Bob Marley. Now, that’s me. I don’t know about Tom & Tim. Oh wait…No! It’s “No woman, no cry” by WoodGrain as can be seen on Youtube! (much more from The WoodGrain on the band’s official website www.bluesfolks.com)
BN: PERFECT!!! I love Bob Marley. Lastly, on what dates & where can we look for you guys? And in parting, what would you like to say to your public?
D: Well, our next show is Aug. 15th 8pm @ The Ridglea playing with WoodGrain baby! It’s gonna be great atmosphere, people, & bands! So come & make the Ft. Worth scene happen!
BN: Thanks again Danny! For The Dallas Couny BlueNote this is Joey Black reporting….
The mood was tense as we plodded through traffic into Fort Worth on our way to play The Ridglea Theatre’s 2nd ‘New Band’ night. Would we be on the main stage or the ‘upstairs lounge’ stage? How many people would show up simply for us? For all the bands? And who? For that matter, who were the other bands? What kind of music would THEY play? These many questions rattled around in our heads. Not doubts. Questions.
The first of four bands to play that night was El Show. I didn’t get a chance to speak to these cats because we played 2nd, rite after them. They were tight & efficient without losing there groove-ability. Sort of 311 on zanax with a little Sublime in there somewhere. A good, head bobbing, mellow mix. They seemed to have a good crowd too.
Next of course was…us. The WoodGrain. It was our first show ever in Fort Worth, and certainly our first show in such a large and popular music venue. We WERE on the main stage by the way. Our rather sizeable devoted following was just perfectly early. THANKS SO MUCH ALL OF YOU!!!! And . . .we The WoodGrain were right on time. As I stated earlier, we had many questions, and…if there were ANY doubts…we killed’em…dead. It was a perfect showcase of what one WoodGrain fan would later call a “precise slacked’ness” reminiscent of The Rolling Stones. A huge yet warranted compliment. The same fan also threw us a huge and unwarranted after party with frozen pizzas and beer. Ah the rock & roll life….
We were called back for a four song encore during which we layed to waste some of our better cover material with a brash nod toward virsatility.
The only other band I can comment on was Neptune Local. They will be jammin’ on the same bill with us again on the main stage at The Ridglea Sat. Aug. 15th. With regard to their sound…? I’d say soft metal meets hard reggea, but… with SOUL. They will get you movin’ and feelin good.
The attack started with…surgical precision. Only at the end of the night ,and with the culmination of all that was to come…could you admit that you were reminded of the feeling you had when waiting for the “SHOCK & AWE” bombing campaigne to begin over Bahgdad. The atack started with… surgical precision.
That laser guided focus was personified…and musically electrified by eleven40. Denton’s own… and long time, some time battery mates of The WoodGrain. These cat’s brought an apple to put on the teacher’s desk to go with thier ‘A’ game. Tight, surgical, & unnapologetically rythmic. If your head wasn’t shakin’…either you were dead, or the med’s had’nt yet kicked in. A tight cover of “Badfish” being my personal favorite of the onslaught.
Now… for those who waited patiently like good, bloodthirsty Americans watching CNN or Fox News war coverage…The WoodGrain did thier damn’d'est to deliver on the promise of “SHOCK & AWE”…
An accoustic wall of sound with a barrage of vionlently melodic southern harmonica followed by a cluster bomb delivered by the gonzo drumming of Franky Fernando. Armed to the teeth with the blues… The WoodGrain delivered justice to those who remained after eleven40’s carpet bomb-like effectiveness…
JB: Yeah baby I guess…wait…can you hear me okay? I’m on my cell phone at a friend…uh …”Slack’s’” house.
BN: Yeah gotcha just fine brotha. So…tell us all that is new in the world of WoodGrain.
JB: uh, …
BN : Wait, first let me tell you I loved your review of The Texas Meltdown last Fri.! And agree’d show was AWESOME and we’ll have Spencer on anytime.
JB: Oh yeah you’ll have to party with that guy sometime! Look I gotta run in a few minutes but uh … just wanted to get everybody the lowdown on WoodGrain’s schedule…
BN: Well… go ahead then I guess. And before you go I DO have ONE question…OK?!
JB: Yeah baby sorry I gotta cut it short but WoodGrain…every thurs. at LoneStar Country Club in Coppell TX. then we’re at Rafeal’s in Aubrey Sat. the 25th of this month followed by our big show at The Ridglea Theatre in Fort Worth on Wed. the 29th.. Also, next month Aug. 28th we’re at the American Legion in Cleburne Tx.. Please come one come all and support us. Ok, what’s yer question darlin’? I really gotta go.
BN: Is there any truth at all to the rumors you guys might be playing at Raz on The Braz this year?
JB: Negative ‘ghost rider’ the pattern is full. (laughs) No really…uh… that boat left and we ain’t on it. but…it’s cool. We’ll keep swimmin’. Maybe play it next year…We WILL, however be at the next Shellrock Farm Music Festival! See you all there…and hey…I’m gonna hand the phone to Franky Fernando (WoodGrain drummer) to finish up with ya. Later…
BN: Well alright that was Joey Black handing the phone now to Franky Fernando…Thanks for this time Franky…Uh…How and when did you meet Mr. Nate?
FF: (long exhale)We began a fight to the death in what used to be Deep Ellum. After several days of destroying Dallas, we made a vow to join forces & would resume at a later time…
BN: C’mon man, you’d kill Nate. But really, what makes you a perfect fit for WoodGrain?
FF: Ok, seriously…it’s all about rythym and timing for me. I have a great chemistry with these fellas. I feel like it was our destiny to meet, and that’s pretty fuckin’ awesome!
BN: So…you believe in fate. What else do you believe in …strongly?
FF: You reap what you sow and you get what you grow in this lifetime.
BN: Drummer-poet…I can dig that. Musically, as a drummer, how would you pigeonhole your influences?
FF: (long sucking noise followed by another long exhale) First…I would buy them dinner. Then get them really drunk taking shots of whiskey.
BN: Yes, of course, but who is ‘them’? …Your influences?
FF: Oh, ok. Well, I guess if I could only pick three it would be Jimi Hendrix, Howlin’ Wolf, and The Black Keys. I thought you meant somethin’ else.
BN: It’s cool. And yeah…three GREAT ones! Gonna have to wrap this up. Gotta deadline. Any parting words?
FF: Keep your eyes on WoodGrain cuz we’re takin’ over in 2010!
BN: Alright talk to you next week! That was Joey Black and Franky Fernando…keep reading The Dallas County BlueNote folks.
PThe air was heavy. Hot…& heavy. Not heavy ‘humid’ but…the kind of heavy that tells you something is coming. The kind of air that tells you that there’s something big around the corner. Last night…the air didn’t lie.
We, WoodGrain opened the show with a sweat soaked enthusiasm that seemed to make everything taste…salty… made everyone feel just a little more…wet. The first set closed with howling renditions of our own ‘In The Doorway’ & ‘Blackwater’.
The smoke billowed high behind the backstage fence at LoneStar during brief WG breaks. There was a purple haze sighting. There was a Devil with a blue dress on. The later performing bands were beginning to unload. Confidence was high…everyone was …high. The show…must’ve gone on.
WoodGrain closed it’s portion of the evening with a barrage of whiskey soaked house tested jam’s and blues that got some of the women hotter than the asphalt today at 4pm.
Up next was Hats & Statues. A very large group with a sound that I called “Americana meets… pissed off at The Violent Femmes”. When confronted with this assesment, the frontman for Hats & Statues (whose name escapes me) errupted into laughter and invited me to have a beer with he and his crew. Speaking of that crew…there was a lovely lady who took a picture of me kissing my beautiful wife Andrea. I do hope she forwards it.
Anyway, just when the air seemed lighten, one might’ve been given the impression that a small plane out of nearby DFW had crashed into the back corner of LoneStar. Knocked out of the sky perhaps by the Paranoia Dance Party frontman (Matt). He’s not a big guy… But at times, with the brutal ska metal exsplosion goning on behind him, he resembled King Kong climbing his mic. stand. These guys, Paranoia Dance Party, are based out of Tampa Fla. & are just wrapping up a month long tour. I’m currently working on arranging an interview with bass player (Spencer) in The Dallas County BlueNote. Look forward to that because these guys ROCK!!!
Just when we all thought it was safe to go to…therapy… Informant took the floor & put on a show that just made perfect sense given the way the hot summer night had transpired. They gave everybody one last thunderstorm of sweat & ska. Frontman (Chris) oblitterated his frustrations of the daily grind by bouncing, whaling, and blowing his horn with steally eyed determined enthusiasm. He and his horn sort of reminded me of Tony Montana with a machine gun at the end of Scarface. “You wanna play rough?!? OK!”
Informant however didn’t play ‘rough’. They were as tight as ever. Never letting the crowd lose that salty taste in their drinks.
Lastly, thank you to all of the friends and fans of each group who played their guts out last night. Special thanks to Hats & Statues, Paranoia Dance Party, & Informant. All these guy’s really spilled their buckets last night. I know I’ll never forget it.
ps WoodGrain @ The Ridglea Theatre on Camp Bowie in Fort Worth WED. July 29th 8:15 pm $5 cover ALL ages welcome WE NEED YOU THERE!!!!!
Posted by franky fernando on 9th July 2009 in Uncategorized
8pm @ Lonestar Bar!! One Nation Under A Groove Gettin Down For The Funk Of It!! PS. Yes we can get some pics up “without all the fingers” even tho we know you love to hate it >:
BN: Thanks Mr. …Black is it?
JB: You’re welcome man and uh…yeah Black…happy to be talkin’ with you.
BN: Ok… right on man, right on. So lets dive right into the shallow end head first. How did WoodGrain Come together?
JB: Man, it was just good timin’…you know? I mean… Kunkle Whitebread and I been playin’ since forever and we been through a few changes. Lost some people…gained some people… (trailing off… deep in thought(?))
Uh… you know it’s funny now that I think about it. Kunkle Whitebread left the band for a while back when it was still Joey Black and THE Coincidence and over shrooms one night I begged him to come back. COINCIDENTALLY that night…his first show back with me… Mr. Nate showed up to ’sit in’ on our gig as an audition for playin’ every wed. night at the same bar (LoneStar Country Club, Coppell Tx.).
BN: Had you ever met or heard of Mr.Nate before then?
JB: Unfortunately no…I’m not gonna say how much older but…I’m just a little bit older than he is. Ha…Keep ya’ll guessin’!
BN: Sorry, anyway, continue…
JB: No problem man. So, where was I…? Oh yeah. So, there’s Nate & we thought cool man another guitar picker with an old soul…We could just tell, you know. It was for like…a good minute until we realized his ‘guitar’ case was aweful small. Then we realized he had a mandolyn and we went from being like “cool!” to bein’ like “COOL!!!”. I can’t speak to what Whitebread was thinkin’ but I definitely had other plans than just him ’sittin’ in’…you dig?
BN: Yeah I dig man…so…you guys been playin together since then?
JB: Yeah. And then Franky…that’s also funny cuz Nate always fuckin’ knew’em but kinda kept him a secret. It was always “Don’t worry guys…I’ll get us a drummer.” from Nate. Then one week it changed to “Guys, I gotta drummer coming next week.” And I really can’t say enough how…uncanny we all think it is that Franky fits SO WELL. As a dude and a musician. He’s been great. I’d say over all we have just the right combination of talent and egos and … a real potential for grow’ability(?)…is that a word?
BN: Uh, don’t think so buddy…but that brings me to my next question. What prompted the name change to WoodGrain from THE Coincidence?
JB: Well…It had alot to do with Mr.Nate joining up with us. I was really attached to the name because I felt and still feel like coincidence has played a HUGE part in the forming of this band. However,
I…we, also felt like we could start moving toward the type of band we wanted to have in the end.
BN: Which is…?
JB: A group…you know? Like ‘The Band’ whom we are all BIG fans of. But, I guess I mean it’s a band without a ‘front’ man or whatever. A wildcat offense with multiple sets. He sings, he plays lead, rythym the whole thing…So do I. Versatility baby. That’s Woodgrain.
BN: Well that’s also all the time we have today… thanks Mr. Black.
JB: Please…Call me Joey.

Some of you may already know but I felt it nescessary to inform the rest of you that a solo version of the exclusive WoodGrain original “In the Doorway”… (a dark blues meets acoustic metal masterpiece written by me) is available at my personal website joeyblack.net. A bonus nugget… Me and Jesica “MaryJane” Mize (no longer with group) doing Baglady. Just stop “In the Doorway” and scroll down. Really, all of you, check it out as soon as you are done catching up on all WoodGrain news. Thanks.-JoeyBlack
We were back in our …comfortable(?)… no that’s not the right word…in our…weekly tues. nite corner of LoneStar & I gotta say…without Mr. Nate it was definitly not your normal full on WoodGrain performance. But… as they say …the go must show on!!! We missed alot of you but really appreciate th decent crowd we did have there get’n good “WooDG” on it… I’m here with Kunkle Whitebread rite now and he’d have posted this except for the fact that… he don’t remeber shit…yeah…was a good night! Franky Fernando kicked names and took ass…
Also, there is a definite possibility that we’ll be switching back to playing on thurs. nites as we did (just for the summer) last year. Hope this helps limit the amount of excuses alot you go with continually to avoid get’n “WooDG”… Whatever, be there…WE DON’T FUCKIN’ DISSAPOINT!!!!!!!!!

Rumors may’ve spread like a fire on the side of 121 after sum asshole threw out his burning joint cuz he was paranoid a cop was bout to pull’em over… but … there is finally a truth!!!! WoodGrain IS confirmed for the 29th! Yeah…it IS a WED.. And HELL YEAH it’s in FORT WORTH… WHATEVER… We all have a month to plan accordingly. To understand the importance of the attendance of each and EVERY one of you just read the post under this one. Really…read it!
Anyhow…the reason for my redundancy is that on my post lastnite I rudely forgot to mention that The Bulletproof Cricket Band (lately our partners in music crime) are also on that bill the 29th along with many other up and coming acts that I’m sure we’ll all enjoy. Still, special thanks to BCB without whom this WoodGrain show would not be possible.
We’ll be back at LoneStar this Tues. minus Mr. Nate as he has some international business to attend to. Just hope we’re not minus any of you.
‘Sup Grainheads…. Uh… Just wanted to announce that we will be playing the Ridglea Theatre’s “New Band Night” Wed. June 29th. time t.b.d.. I know it’s a Wed. & all that. Whatever…The thing about this show is ….Well… it’s not about us. It’s about you! If we can manage to get 20 or preferrably 30+ ppl. to show up in direct support of WoodGrain we’ll definitly be booked again there. With 30+ it will be a weekend show next time. We need you like we never have before. We won’t let you down! WoodGrain… Ridglea Theatre… Fuckin’ awesome!!!!! I love each of you. -Joey Black
The Bulletproof Cricket Band rolled into LoneStar this past Tues. to open for us… bringing with them a great crowd and the certain type of cool bravado befitting a group of musicians as talented as they are. Sure, steady, cool, and confident. I’m completely embarrassed (ha… I said bare assed) to admit that I’m not familiar with the song titles but the material itself is great. Really, if you have the means I highly recomend catching a BCB show…tell Brak that Joey Black sent you.
As for the “Grain”… I may be a little bit partial but…I’d say we blew the roof off the motherfuckin’ place. And once again…great crowd! Thanks SO MUCH to all of you.
Now speaking of bare assed…my wife Andrea and I made the trek down to Austin yesterday…both of us on a work trip of sorts. While she schmoozed apartment association big wigs at the Hyatt on the river I was on foot downtown making as many contacts for future shows as I could. Until I spent the rest of my walking around money on a soda and cigaretttes for a homeless…or “indoors challenged” dude that I met. Now…I sit (literally bare assed) typing this post from my mother and father n laws computer. Bout to leave for the all nude, world famous Star Ranch…. Gonna rock out with my…..
Believe the hype folks…WoodGrain has added a drummer… the great Franky Fernando is gonna be helping us get good “WOOD” on it…literally as he pounds the skins. Forget everything that you think you thought you’d think about understanding what you thought about when you were thinking about WoodGrain. This Tues, (THE SHOW I’VE BEEN HARPING ON) June 16th at LoneStar Country Club we’ll be lettin” the goodtimes roll with the Bulletproof Cricket band outta Cleburne Tx.. We gon’ fill our cups with cold beer, our lungs with good smoke, and YOUR ears with solid music. GET THERE!-JOEY BLACK
Hmmm, here we are. Incredibly twisted and living beyond a natural existance. Sitting on the carpeted floor of Frankies house, smoking, joking, and playing music. The wood pannel walls, shifting in my eyes, it may as well be 1969.
But who in Gods name is this frankie dude? Who indeed?
Hmmmm. frankie fernando, our new drummer. wait till you hear it. Your face will melt off. Mine is lying on the floor at this very moment.
Peace-Mista nate
So really, the bullshit written in languages I can’t read… has got to fuckin’ stop! I mean, I dig that WoodGrain is big with eastern European hookers and all…(just for typing that they’ll send me more bullshit)…Oh and Mr.Nate is alive and well and living in …sin(?) and there are rumors of a drummer audition at our next show Tues. at LoneStar…KILLER!
So yeah…4 real…I was editing my “commemts” & there’s all this stuff from somewhere over seas! A bunch of writing that looks all crazy. One was an ad. 4 call girls in Kiev. Crazy… Man…Otherwise… You guys all keep open the evening of the 16th & the morning of the 17th (ha!) cuz The Bulletproof Cricket Band will be jammin’ with us at LoneStar. Those mfr’s r badass!!! If you want, check them out on myspace. They, like us, need YOUR support. C U next Tues. & please also b at the show on the 16th. Thanx-WoodGrain
So… those of you whom I haven’t beaten to death with stories of my former football prowess… I’ll tell you… I was one hell of a player. I am also a huge Cowboys fan. But… I digress… the point is … Micheal “The Playmaker” Irvin has a new show on Spike TV called 4th & Long. DB’s (the pos. I played in ju.co.) compete against WR’s (the pos. I moved to in 4yr. college) in a reality show competing for a training camp roster spot to actually tryout for the… actuall.. uh … Cowboy’s. Stay with me hear “Wood”Chucks & “Wood”Chicks…. They are basically doing Hell’s Kitchen but… fuckin’ football! It’s AWESOME!!!! Mike Irvin who, not to name drop but… I’ve met (and hung out with several times) is REALLY LIKE THAT! That mf’r goes hard! He’s truly the Chef Ramsey of FOOTBALL reality tv. Also, while I’m kickin’ ass & takin’ names on shit I think about TV… Let me just say that Adam Lambert got FUCKING SCREWED on American Idol…as did Allison & Danny…. who …respectively, lol, were both better than uh… what’s his name… uh is there a 12 yr. old girl who can tell me ,who won that bs show?!?1? Whatever… WoodGrain kicks ass… I’m glad to play with them… Be at the show Tues. June 16th to see us KILL with The BulletProof Cricket Band. I love you… alll…Joey
Last night’s show at Lone Star was bad ass… we killed …as usual. The Cleveland Cav’s were SUPPOSED to walk through to the finals and now face a 3-1 deficit…Holy SHIT… well Lebron, M.J. had his share of frustration b4 finally winning the big one (6 times)…hang in there buddy! The Rangers were SUPPOSED to SUCK… they don’t… I’m drinking “the koolaid”! I think this is gonna b a fun year. Don’t forget to make plans to be at our Tues. June 16th show at LoneStar…The Bulletproof Cricket Band will be there. It will be the show of the century…or…at least that nite. Thanx again EVERYBODY for making last weekend a….fn blur! We partied like Bluesfolk Stars! Ya’ll keep gettin’ good “wood” on it! C U SOON!-Joey Black

In addition to tried and true favorites such as “Black Water (Hide What I Done)”, “In the Doorway”, & the increasingly popular “Highs Been Low” we are working on get’n good “Wood” on two new ones.
Alot of you have already heard tentaive versions of “Black Shoes… Brown Hat”…a good blues’ed up play on words commentary on not only my fashion but also each of my names.
The other… “I’m Gonna Do You Wrong”… is… what can I say? Awesome! Another Mr. Nate mando masterpiece… Dark AND Lively!
All of these above mentioned cuts plus a few more will hopefully be hitting the website & Bluesfolks.com/myspace before the end of the summer. We hope… KNOW… you will like them.
Also, I’m excited to break news that the next Shellrock Farm Musicfest & campout is being tentatively planned for the last weekend in Sept.. We’ll be there along with the Southern Bros. Band (awesome dudes, awesome tunes) and alot of other great artists and even better people.
Lastly. . . please make plans to be at our LoneStar show Tues. June 16th.. The Bulletproof Cricket band out of Cleburne Tx. June 16th…LoneStar….WoodGrain …..

June 16th… WE NEED EVERYBODY THERE … We are also scheduled to play LS may 30 but it may just have to be Mr.Nate & Kunkle WhiteBread because my son Jordan has a baseball tournament in Rockwall that day… Lastly . . .
